Paleo

Eat like it's pre-agriculture — meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts; no grains, legumes, or dairy.

What it is

The paleo diet is built around foods presumed available before farming: meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds. Grains, legumes (including peanuts and soy), dairy, and refined sugar are out — the reasoning being that agriculture introduced these foods more recently than our digestion evolved for.

Common foods

Meat and fish, plenty of vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds, and natural fats like olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado.

What's out

Bread, pasta, rice, and other grains; beans, lentils, peanuts, and soy; milk, cheese, and other dairy; refined sugar. Honey and maple syrup are generally fine, in moderation — they predate farming even if refined sugar doesn't.

Tips & hacks

  • Cauliflower and sweet potato do a lot of the "starch" job without needing a grain — riced cauliflower, roasted sweet potato wedges, and plantains are paleo staples for exactly this reason.
  • Almond and coconut flour stand in for wheat flour in baking, though the texture is genuinely different, not a 1:1 swap.
  • Read labels on "paleo" packaged snacks carefully — the label alone doesn't guarantee it; added sugar and non-paleo oils show up more often than you'd expect.
  • Recipes here are flagged by absence of grains, legumes, dairy, and refined sugar in the ingredient list — a best-effort read, not a certified paleo audit.
